Watching the Watchdogs: Improving regulation and accountability of NGOs

Aniket Deepak Agarwal and Abhiroop Mukherjee write about the NGOs and CSOs and their growth in developing countries.

Abstract

A concern with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and local civil society organizations (CSOs) is that their accountability is minimal. Active governance principles and accountability standards are imperative to restore NGOs and CSOs as a practical means of governance and growth in any developing country. It is essential that every legal persona (societies, trusts and other organizations) be subjected to some basic guidelines to ensure necessary public accountability and effective fulfilment of its goals. These guidelines will provide a positive and affirmative effect on the governance at national and international levels.
